Job Description: Teacher Assistant
Position Title: Teacher Assistant
Reports To: Lead Teacher / Director / Site Supervisor Program: Preschool / Child Care Program Employment Status: Full-Time or Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Position Summary:
The Teacher Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in supervising children, implementing classroom activities, maintaining routines, and creating a safe and nurturing learning environment. The Teacher Assistant helps children participate in daily activities, transitions, meals, rest time, outdoor play, and classroom learning experiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Lead Teacher with daily classroom routines, activities, and transitions.
  • Supervise children at all times and maintain child safety indoors and outdoors.
  • Support children during meals, snacks, toileting, handwashing, rest time, and cleanup.
  • Help set up and clean up classroom materials, learning centers, and activities.
  • Use positive guidance, redirection, and appropriate language when supporting children’s behavior.
  • Encourage children’s independence, communication, social skills, and emotional development.
  • Assist with small-group and whole-group classroom activities.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment.
  • Follow cleaning and sanitizing procedures throughout the day.
  • Communicate concerns or observations to the Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
  • Follow all center policies, health and safety rules, and licensing requirements.
  • Report suspected child abuse or neglect as a mandated reporter.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must meet California child care licensing requirements for the position.
  • Early Childhood Education coursework preferred.
  • Current or ability to obtain Mandated Reporter training.
  • Current or ability to obtain Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification, if required.
  • Current or ability to obtain health screening, TB clearance, immunization records, and criminal background clearance.
  • Experience working with young children preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, lift, and move throughout the classroom and playground.
  • Ability to lift or assist children as needed.
  • Ability to participate in indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Ability to supervise children visually and physically at all times.

Work Expectations:
The Teacher Assistant is expected to support the Lead Teacher, follow classroom routines, maintain dependable attendance, and help provide a safe, caring, and respectful learning environment for children.
